ZigZag vs NYT Strands
ZigZag vs Strands: Themed Word Search Puzzles Compared
Strands turned the word search into a themed deduction puzzle: every letter belongs to some answer, and the theme is the real clue. ZigZag is our free daily version of that idea, with a visible trace for every word you find and colour-coded paths so a finished board reads like a diagram.
The short verdict
ZigZag is the free Strands-style option: same themed word-path loop, clearer visual feedback, no subscription. Strands still wins on the wit of its themes.

Read the theme before you scan letters
In both games, hunting letter by letter is the slow route. Write down five or six words that a person would actually associate with the theme, then look for their first two letters in the grid. Themed word hunts reward vocabulary priming far more than scanning.
Work from the corners inward
Corner and edge letters have fewer neighbours, so they belong to fewer possible paths. Anchoring an answer at an edge usually collapses the ambiguity in the middle of the grid, which is where the crossings live.
Hints without ruining the board
ZigZag's hints are tiered: the first narrows the region, the next reveals a starting letter, and only the last shows a full path. That lets you unstick yourself without deleting the puzzle, which is the usual complaint about all-or-nothing reveals.

ZigZag vs NYT Strands: frequently asked questions
Is there a free alternative to NYT Strands?
Yes. ZigZag is a free daily themed word-path puzzle: read the theme, trace answers through the grid, and finish with the highlighted key word. No subscription and no signup.
How is ZigZag different from a word search?
A classic word search gives you the word list. ZigZag gives you only the theme, so finding the answers is the puzzle — and every letter in the grid belongs to one of them.
Does ZigZag have hints?
Yes, tiered hints: first a region, then a starting letter, then the full path — so you can get unstuck without spoiling the board.
Can I play past ZigZag puzzles?
Pro members can play the last 30 days from the archive. Today's board is free for everyone.
Is ZigZag good on mobile?
Yes. Paths are drawn by dragging across the grid and each found word keeps its own colour, which stays legible on small screens.
