How to play Sudoku
- 1Fill the 9x9 grid so every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 to 9 exactly once.
- 2Click or tap a cell and type a digit, or use the on-screen number pad.
- 3Use pencil marks to note candidates when a cell has more than one possibility.
- 4Given digits cannot be changed; only your entries can.
- 5Pick a difficulty level, or play the shared daily grid.
Sudoku strategy
Ask where a digit can go, not what fits here
Scanning a single cell for candidates stalls quickly. Instead take one digit and check each row, column and box for the only place it can still live. Most apparent dead ends resolve immediately with this switch.
Use naked and hidden pairs
If two cells in a unit both hold exactly the same two candidates, no other cell in that unit can use those digits. Recognising this one pattern is the single biggest jump from beginner to intermediate.
Pencil mark only when scanning fails
Filling every candidate straight away creates visual noise. Solve everything you can by scanning first, then pencil mark the region that is blocking you.
Sudoku — frequently asked questions
Is this Sudoku free?
Yes, every daily grid and every difficulty level is free to play with no account required.
How do you play Sudoku?
Place digits 1 to 9 so that no digit repeats in any row, column or 3x3 box. Every puzzle is solvable by logic alone.
Do the puzzles always have one solution?
Yes. Each grid is checked by a solver before it is published, so there is exactly one valid answer and no guesswork is needed.
Which difficulty should a beginner start with?
Start on the easiest level, where scanning alone is enough to finish the grid, then move up once you finish consistently without pencil marks.
How often is there a new daily Sudoku?
A new daily grid appears at 00:00 UTC and is the same for every player. You can also generate unlimited puzzles at any difficulty.
Can I play Sudoku on mobile?
Yes. The board supports touch input with an on-screen number pad, and works in any mobile browser.
